 The Paints

These concentrated, paste paints have been prepared specifically for the suminagashi style of marbling, using pure pigments with a glue binder. They should be diluted approximately 1:1 with water. Available colors are: black, indigo, red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. We use ox gall as a dispersant to facilitate spread of color, when needed, but Sumifactant, and other dispersants can be used as well. Photo Flo, however, will not work with several of these paints, purple and green in particular. Colors can be mixed to create additional hues. These paints float well, often needing no additional dispersant, and they can be used with western papers without the need to prepare the papers with alum. They can be used to marble silk, however they cannot be washed and would have to be dry cleaned. Alternatively, the paints can be used as acrylics by adding a few drops of an acrylic medium, then heat setting after drying. All of these samples were made on a 21 X 25 inch vat.
